What to Check on Your Car Before Hitting the Road

Planning a road trip? Be sure to work this checklist into your plans before rolling out:

 

 

Basic Fluids

  1. Engine Oil – Check level and condition. Top up or change if needed.
  2. Coolant – Make sure it’s at the proper level and free of leaks.
  3. Brake Fluid – Should be within the recommended range and not dark or dirty.
  4. Transmission Fluid – (if applicable) Check level and color.
  5. Windshield Washer Fluid – Top up to ensure clear visibility.
  6. Power Steering Fluid – Top up where necessary.

Tires

  1. Tire Pressure – Inflate all tires (including the spare) to the recommended PSI.
  2. Tread Depth – Ensure at least 1.6mm tread (use a coin or tread gauge).
  3. Check for Damage – Look for cracks, bulges, or uneven wear.
  4. Spare Tire & Tools – Ensure the spare is usable and tools/jack are present.

Battery

  1. Charge Level – Fully charged with clean terminals.
  2. No Corrosion – Clean off any corrosion on terminals.
  3. Age – Replace if more than 3–5 years old or showing signs of weakness.

Lights & Wipers

  1. Headlights / Taillights / Indicators / Brake Lights – Test all lights.
  2. Fog Lights & Hazard Lights – Ensure functionality.
  3. Wiper Blades – Check for cracks or streaks; replace if necessary.
  4. Windshield – Clean and check for cracks.

Brakes

  1. Brake Pads – Listen for squeaking; check pad thickness if possible.
  2. Brake Response – Test for spongy or delayed braking.
  3. Handbrake – Ensure it engages and releases properly.

Belts & Hoses

  1. Drive Belts / Serpentine Belt – Look for wear or fraying.
  2. Radiator & Heater Hoses – Check for leaks, cracks, or bulges.

Navigation & Documents

  1. GPS / Maps (online & offline)
  2. Valid Driver’s License
  3. Vehicle Registration
  4. Insurance Documents
  5. Toll Card

Final Checks Before You Go!

  • Test Drive! – Take a short drive to listen out for any other strange noises.
  • Set Your Itinerary & Notify Someone – Let someone know your route and schedule.
