Planning a road trip? Be sure to work this checklist into your plans before rolling out:
Basic Fluids
- Engine Oil – Check level and condition. Top up or change if needed.
- Coolant – Make sure it’s at the proper level and free of leaks.
- Brake Fluid – Should be within the recommended range and not dark or dirty.
- Transmission Fluid – (if applicable) Check level and color.
- Windshield Washer Fluid – Top up to ensure clear visibility.
- Power Steering Fluid – Top up where necessary.
Tires
- Tire Pressure – Inflate all tires (including the spare) to the recommended PSI.
- Tread Depth – Ensure at least 1.6mm tread (use a coin or tread gauge).
- Check for Damage – Look for cracks, bulges, or uneven wear.
- Spare Tire & Tools – Ensure the spare is usable and tools/jack are present.
Battery
- Charge Level – Fully charged with clean terminals.
- No Corrosion – Clean off any corrosion on terminals.
- Age – Replace if more than 3–5 years old or showing signs of weakness.
Lights & Wipers
- Headlights / Taillights / Indicators / Brake Lights – Test all lights.
- Fog Lights & Hazard Lights – Ensure functionality.
- Wiper Blades – Check for cracks or streaks; replace if necessary.
- Windshield – Clean and check for cracks.
Brakes
- Brake Pads – Listen for squeaking; check pad thickness if possible.
- Brake Response – Test for spongy or delayed braking.
- Handbrake – Ensure it engages and releases properly.
Belts & Hoses
- Drive Belts / Serpentine Belt – Look for wear or fraying.
- Radiator & Heater Hoses – Check for leaks, cracks, or bulges.
Navigation & Documents
- GPS / Maps (online & offline)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Vehicle Registration
- Insurance Documents
- Toll Card
Final Checks Before You Go!
- Test Drive! – Take a short drive to listen out for any other strange noises.
- Set Your Itinerary & Notify Someone – Let someone know your route and schedule.
